[Abk. für Palm(top) Operating System], ein Betriebssystem für Palmtops bzw. PDAs. Hauptcharakteristikum ist der einfache Aufbau des Systems und die Beschränkung auf für den mobilen Einsatz benötigte Funktionen. Dazu gehören in der aktuellen Version Palm OS 4.1 v. a. Organizer-Funktionen (z. B. Adressverwaltung, Kalender) und Kommunikationsdienste (Internetzugang, E-Mail, SMS). Auf eine aufwendige Darstellung mit einer großen Zahl von Icons wurde verzichtet, ebenso auf Zusatzdienste wie etwa Formatierungen. Für weiter gehende (Nach-)Bearbeitungen ist vielmehr die Portierung auf den PC vorgesehen. Die Vorteile der sparsamen Ausstattung liegen zum einen im geringen Speicher- und Energiebedarf, zum anderen in der Übersichtlichkeit von Darstellung und Bedienung.
 
Palm OS nimmt eine führende Stellung auf dem Markt der Betriebssysteme für PDAs ein. Zahlreiche Anwendungsprogramme stehen zur Verfügung. Im Vergleich zu Palm OS bietet das Konkurrenzprodukt Windows CE/Pocket PC 2002 wesentlich mehr Funktionen an, benötigt aber auch entsprechend mehr Ressourcen.
